What is Esports 

Esports is coming to Parkview High School next semester. Esports is a form of competition using video games. Esports are often organized by multiplayer video game competitions, particularly individually or as teams. This involves playing in teams to reach the goal while working together. Each player uses their gaming system and a headset often used for communication between players.

The Start Of Esports 

Esports started in late 1971. It was an event held by the University of Stanford, where students of multiple backgrounds got to compete in a battle of the vintage Spacewar game. Students gathered to compete for the top prize of a year’s subscription to Rolling Stone magazine. A wide bracket at the university saw 24 players compete for a subscription to Rolling Stone, thanks to the magazine providing sponsorship for the event. 

Popularity Of Esports 

The most popular genres of esports are fighting games, first-person shooters, real-time strategy, or multiplayer online battle arena games, with the multiplayer online battle arena games genre being the most popular in terms of participation and viewership. Esports is the next big thing in sports. Since 2010, esports has become more popular, and over 456 million people watched the game in the U.S. This brought in a large profit of about 1billion USD. The video game industry survived the recession, with the release of the Nintendo entertainment system console playing a major role. Competitive gaming had already started to become well known in popular culture in the 1980s through arcades and home consoles. League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Dota 2 are widely considered to be the biggest esports games. There continues to be growth in esports with the arrival of new games every year. 

The future of Esports 

The esports community continues to grow and so does the profit the players bring in. The global esports economy is estimated to grow to $905.6 million, of which a large part of the revenue will be generated through sponsorships, advertising, media rights, and content licenses. It’s also estimated that further millions will be generated from consumer spending on tickets and merchandise, while partnerships with game publishers will see more millions invested. The U.S brings in a large amount of revenue. Esports also continues to grow in popularity. There are many esports events. In 2017, there were 588 major esports events.
