National Geographic states, “It’s also true that most of an automobile’s environmental impact, perhaps 80 to 90 percent, will be due to fuel consumption and emissions of air pollution and greenhouse gases that climate scientists say are driving global warming.” Vehicles are a great advancement to society because it has helped transport people or goods ever since it was first created; Vehicles consume a lot of energy which can be harmful to our near future if it is not addressed. Electric vehicles can address this problem, specifically Tesla’s. Tesla was founded in San Carlos, CA on July 1, 2003, and believes that its brand of electric cars will be far better for the future than gas cars without compromising anything. Tesla’s Impact Report states, “We believe the faster the world stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards a zero-emissions future, the better. Tesla’s products offer a complete solution – sustainable generation, storage, and usage – all capable of being powered by the sun. We envision a world powered by solar energy, running on batteries and transported by all-electric cars.” Michael Serac, a senior and car enthusiast from Parkview Highschool owns a 2014 Honda Accord Coupe but hopes to adopt Tesla as his future car. Serac explains that the reason he would convert from a gas car to an all-electric vehicle is that “I drive a lot, more than three hundred miles a week costing me over three hundred fifty dollars a month. I have met Tesla owners that have said that their electric bill only increased seventeen dollars a month for similar miles driven.” Serac adds on and says, “ It would be a better financial decision to only pay seventeen dollars a month on an electric bill vs paying three hundred for just gas for a conventional car (excluding maintenance cost).” The average cost of maintenance for a typical gas car in a year is more than one thousand dollars, while the average cost of maintenance on a Tesla would only be two hundred eighty dollars after two years of owning it. Some other pros of an all-electric car are: They are easier on the environment by using zero-emissions, electricity being cheaper than gas, maintenance is less frequent and less expensive, EV’s are quieter than most conventional cars, a tax credit will likely be received by lessening impact on the environment, and electric vehicles can shorten your commute time by allowing the HOV lane to be used. Many conventional vehicle lovers would try to debate with EV’s because of their short-range, long recharging time, being an initial large investment, charging station inconsistency, and a lack of variety to consumers. This may be true for most electric vehicles however Tesla has debunked all of the cons that were stated. Tesla has revealed that on a single charge, it can drive up to four hundred miles and through updates, it can allow even more range. Tesla also has superchargers that reduce the long recharging time, and although EV’s are a big investment, the overall cost and maintenance wouldnt come close to what a conventional vehicle would be with maintenance costs. As more people buy Tesla’s, and other EV’s, charging stations will become more common. As more consumers buy EV’s, there will be more variety to the market in the future. Tesla and other electric vehicles have proven that it will be more environmentally safe and economically smarter to buy an all-electric vehicle than a typical conventional gas car.
