Order Revoking Keystone XL Permit and Pausing Resource Leasing in Arctic Refuge

This order reverses the permit for building the Keystone XL pipeline. If the pipeline were completed, as wanted by the Trump administration, it would have imposed on indigenous groups’ treaties, could harm nearby wildlife, and increase global warming.

On the same executive order, President Biden put a temporary halt to gas and oil leasing in the Arctic National wildlife refuge. This rushed deal made by the Trump administration again faced criticism for putting habitats and animals in danger. As Biden opposed the leasing activities, he pledged to protect the refuge during his 4 years as president.

Although this move was opposed by many Republicans on Tuesday, the order was signed and set off.
